They all serve different purposes like open field fights, rallying, garrison, and Barbarian hunting (PVE). If you pick out the right primary commander and pair him/her with the proper secondary commander, you can do wonders in this game.

Below there is a full guide on commander pairing in Rise of Kingdoms for different tasks along with tier list ranking.

Note: These pairings change over time, especially when there are new legendary commanders added to the game. We will try to keep this list up to date. As of now, it’s updated till new Archer commanders Ashurbanipal and Legendary Hermann Prime.

It’s been a while since we made changes to this best commander pairing guide. So many new commanders have been added to the game. There are so many new ways to pair different commanders too.

Best open field commander pairing in Rise of Kingdoms

There is no doubt that almost everyone likes open-field battles. It’s so much fun and doesn’t give you dead troops. Of course, sometimes lag comes in during those huge murder ball fights and you end up with huge hospital bills. Here is the best commander pairing for open-field fights in the Rise of Kingdoms.

Cavalry commanders pairing

Alexander Nevsky and Joan of Arc Prime

Pros

• Still holding strong against new commanders
• Together they have every skill needed for open-field fighting
• Well tested combination
• Damage output is insane with double AOE
• buffs and debuffs

Cons

• Not as good as it’s used to be

Alternative: Huo Qubing and Joan of Arc Prime

Gorgo and Liu Che

Pros

• Extremely High damage output
• Smite damage is one of the best in the game
• anti- murder ball skills
• Gives shields to allies as support
• Takes less skill damage
• Shield abilities
• March speed reduction
• debuff to support your ally in battle

• not very F2P friendly
• New Archer commander can counter them

• Both commanders have AOE
• Poison debuff is extremely good
• lots of march speed for an archer pair

Best garrison commander pairing in ROK

The main goal of garrison commanders is to hold off enemies for as long as possible, hoping that enemy will give up eventually. Here are some best garrison commander pairings that might help you in different situations.

Best Infantry Garrison

Zenobia and Gorgo

Zenobia was one the best infantry garrison in the past, However she got to the sidelines as new commanders got released. However, Now with a release of powerful infantry garrison commander, Gorgo, she is once again back in the picture.

Zeno and Gorgo is curruntly infantry garrison meta and is being used by lots of garrison leader. They can hold strong againsest the rally as well as the swarming. It’s not just best infantry garrison but also overall one of the best garrison in the game right now.

Arrival of Ashurbanipal and Hermann does create difficulaties from them, but this garrison combination will probably best choice compare to other.

Best Archer Garrison

Dido and Heraclius

Dido has been in the game for a while now, and there have been plenty of reports which suggest that she is really strong garrison option. You have two options either pair Zhuge Liang as seconadry or Heraclius as seconadry.

Zhuge Liang option seems to work poorly against the swarm dispate his AOE. You never know when enemy whales might wake up and start swarming your garrison, so your best bet will be Dido and Heraclius

Best Cavalry Garrison

Jan Zizka and Heraclius

It’s not very exicting time for cavalry garrison leaders. Jan Zizka and Heraclius used to be the best cavalry garrison and they still are. However, New commanders are simply too powerful for them.

So, it is best to just avoid putting cavalry garrison, you will get much better value from your cavalry when you rally with them.

Best garrison for city defense

Yi Sun-sin and Theodora

For the city defense, you want commanders that can utilize mixed troop types. YSS and Theodora’s pairing has high nuke damage to melt the rally, defense stats, damage reduction, shield, and debuff removal to hold off enemies for a longer time. Aside from that they also have AOE and Counter damage to work against swarming. So all in all this combination is perfect to defend your city.

Some players have lots of troops of single troop type, in that case diffrent pairing will give better result. below you can see the list of best garrison based on troop specialization.

Best Archer rally pairing

Hermann Prime and Ashurbanipal

Legendary Hermann Prime and Ashurbanipal are newly relesed archer commander in the game. Togather they have highest damage output among the archers.

Hermann’s Poison mechanic is just too good against garrison and Ashurbanipal can also put out lots of damage factor at the same time. Another thing is that they both have AOE, which can effectivly kill any troops that’s trying to reinforce the garrison. cutting off reinforcement makes a hugh diffrence in rally/garrison scenario.

Boudica and Zhuge Liang is still great pair for rally, But Hermann and Ashurbanipal is much better option right now.

Best Cavalry rally pairing

Alexander Nevsky and Justinian I

Nevsky and Joan of Arc used to be the best cavalry rally pair. However afte arrival of the Justinian I, That’s no longer the case. He is simply amazing as a rally.

Together they have one of the highest skill damages in the game. They both can heavily debuff the garrison defense and at the same time has very high damage factor. Based on the reports we have seen, they seem to have good trades against most garrison. So, if you are cavalry rally leader then Nevsky and Justinian is the right pick for you.

Best Infantry rally pairing

Tariq ibn Ziyad and Sargon the Great

This is an absolute must-use rally combo in the game right now. Even if you are running an archer rally or cavalry rally, you will still need to use this as a sort of primary tank rally. Don’t let the word “tank rally” fool you, this is not just defense heavy rally but also offense heavy rally.

Tariq can pump out so much skill damage and when you throw in Awed effect stacks from Sargon which increase skill damage taken, it becomes totally insane. What about swarming the rally? Well, don’t even think about it, Tariq does even more skill damage when multiple targets attack him and Sargon can apply the Awed effect to every target that targets him.

All in all, Tariq and Sargon duo is currently the best tankrally option in the game.
