In our ‘How To Make Boilies’ guide, boilie making materials and ingredients (generally) aren’t too expensive and quite simple to find.

However, the two important pieces of specialist equipment are the bait gun, which is used to pipe out your boilie mix onto your rolling table, and the rolling table itself.

There are many sausage guns available, but we highly recommend the Gardner Sausage Gun which is perfect for small-scale boilie making.

There are custom nozzles which allow varying mix consistencies to pass through it.

The guide recommends using the 16mm nozzle for 20mm boilies and so on.

Then there is the rolling table, which is a must to making perfectly sized boilies!

If you’re making different sized boilies, we suggest a rolling table that either has sized attachments, or double sided size slots to benefit from this.

The Gardner Rolaball is an excellent choice, with the longbase version capable of a longer ‘strokes’ for consistently smooth boilies.

Hand Rolling Your Boilies

If you don’t have the budget for the tools or aren’t sure about buying them straight away, it’s perfectly fine to hand-roll your own!

Just be prepared to get your hands a little dirty!

Ok, let’s jump straight into a basic boilie mix that you can make yourself will relative ease.

Once perfected, you can always add some secret ingredients and experimentto give you that extra edge on the bank.

This is a great mix to get started with making your own boilies at home.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Boilies

1. A Basic Dry Mix

We begin by putting together anincredibly easy dry mixwhich forms the base of almost all boilie mixes.

This dry mix is also referred to as a‘base mix’.If you want to save a bit of time here, you can opt for a ready-made base mix like these ones:

Dynamite Baits – Complex-T Base Mix & Liquid Kit

Mainline Cell Base Mix

CC Moore Base Mixes(A whole host of dry mixes such as fishmeal, bird seed and tiger nut flour)

If you’re making your own from scratch, it is as simple as mixing together a range of dry ingredients. Dry ingredients include crushed hemp seed (or alternate base mix) and flavourings such as milkshake powder, molasses, marmite, chilli powder, shrimp paste – whatever you want to add!

We would suggest placing around 25 tablespoons of these dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and thoroughly mix it all together, or you could place into a bag and shake everything together.

We are looking to create around a 1kg mix.

2. Wet Ingredients

Now it’s time to mix up your liquid.

Crack 4 eggs into a bowl and add other liquid extras such as fish oil, liquid liver, colourings and amino.

GIve this a thourough whisk until you get a consistent colour and texture.

3. Making Your Boilie Paste

Now it’s time to start thinking about making your boilie paste which should be consistent throughout.

The key here is to slowly add the dry mix into the bowl with the egg mixture.

Keep adding and mixing until you get a nice blend and consistency.

If it does appear to look too dry – simply add an additional 10 ml or 20 ml of fish oil.

When the paste is looking malleable, firm and not too wet – you can move onto the rolling stage!

4. Rolling Your Boilies

Now you can begin to think about rolling your boilies!

Take small amount of paste and start to roll them into balls by using the palms of your hands.

As we mentioned, you can use a sausage gun and rolling table to achieve the same size and shape.

If you are using these tools – simple place into the sausage gun and trigger out a long sausage along the rolling table.

Now move the top of the rolling table along these sausages until you’ve got nice, neat boilies!

5. Boiling Boilies!

Once you’re happy that you’ve got a decent size, shape, colour and consistency – you can begin to start placing them into your pan of water.

Make sure the water is covering all of them and crank up the heat.

When they start to rise the top (usually after about a minute), simply scoop them out one-by-one and place onto some kitchen towels.

Its this boiling stage that gives the outer skin its hardness.

You should now leave your boilies to dry out and completely harden at room temperature.

The drying out process takes around 1 hour.

Your very own homemade boilies can now be used straight away – or simply place into a bag and freeze them until your next fishing trip!

How to Make Pop-up Boilies

To make your very own pop ups, you can repeat the above process, but we recommend hand rolling them instead of using a sausage gun/rolling table.

This is because you need to mould the paste around cork balls which makes your pop ups float!

Then simply boil them and leave to dry.

Alternatively, you can add a popup base mix which will give you a bouyant pop up every time.

This just about wraps up our ‘How To Make Boilies’ Guide – we suggest you give some of these recipes a try – and feel the satisfaction of catching using your very own carp boilie!
